      Fledgling

long long ago in a galaxy far
far away his nestlings had all flown the coop
and what exactly had it gotten them? he thought it better to be
safe than sorry or maybe, he thought, safety in numbers
in any event, being a bird in the tree meant he wasn’t
about to be a bird in the hand.

still, it turns out, as fate would have it
removing a square twig from his round nest
and weaving that particular twig into a tapestry of stars
was the seminal straw that broke the osprey’s nest—
propels him through the gauntlet of thermals
      space and time entwine
      he wonders why
      he waited so long.
