Martin Wilmott-Benett, Truck-driver, Riyadh ringroad

With a cargo now of concrete
and iron rods, now of Dutch water-heaters,
German radios, Japanese tv’s,
he clocks up umpteen kilometres
weekly. Embellishing his windscreen,
one sticker’s mottoed, ‘I love the Philippines’;
another features a dozing Garfield the Cat
plus the caption, ‘Homesick, Do Not Disturb’.
Ramadan or Dhu al-Hijja, read here his ensigns
hoisted across desert oceans, reminders
of greener landfalls beyond this contract;
how barren sandstone, basalt, sandstone
are neither the be nor end all; to turn
such ovenish lengths of tarmac into
one more mirage, he has a wife who
is waiting, their next picin on the way.
