Dr David Smith BSc (Hons) PhD FRSA is a director-cameraman and writer specializing in broadcast television documentaries, radio broadcasts, books and articles on science, social issues and the environment. With more than a decade spent as a research physiologist and lecturer in zoology at The University of Melbourne, David published more than 35 research papers and worked in Australia, Canada, Sweden and on the Amazon River in Brazil.
David has worked as Director, Cameraman, Producer, Writer, &/or Presenter on more than twenty broadcast documentaries and hosted his own weekly national television series, David Smith’s Earthwatch, on ABC TV for two years. He wrote, presented and directed two one-hour documentaries for the Seven network’s The World Around Us series: Edge of the Abyss and Continent in Crisis.
Senior Researcher for the ABC/BBC series Nature of Australia, ‘resident zoologist’ on the Don Lane and Bert Newton Shows, David was for a time ‘weather and environment specialist’ for Channel 7 Melbourne.
Author of six books, including two critically acclaimed thrillers, David was also ghost writer for the 1100-page tertiary text Biology: an Australian perspective, published by McGraw-Hill. He recently worked as Associate Producer and Animation Supervisor on the new large-format (IMAX) documentary Australia: land beyond time. The critically acclaimed books Continent in Crisis (Penguin) and Saving a Continent (UNSW Press) grew from Davi’s research for both Nature of Australia and the Earthwatch series
Regarding David’s Penguin thrillers, Freeze Frame and Total Containment, Australian Book Review’s John Carroll wrote: “Ecoterrorism is a fertile field for the thriller writer and David Smith has made it his own in this country.”
Most recently, David filmed a documentary entitled Boris’s Brilliant Bike Ride. Narrated by actor William McInnes, this 47-minute program tells the uplifting story of one remarkable family’s response to their son’s diagnosis with muscular dystrophy. The result: the development over the past 25 years of the largest support organization in Australasia for people and their families living with muscular dystrophy - Muscular Dystrophy Australia. Boris’s Brilliant Bike Ride covers an astonishing sponsorship bike ride through Vietnam as a result of which 30 cyclists raised more than $430,000 towards MD research.
David is an elected member of the Australian Film Institute and was recently elected as a member of Madison Who’s Who Honours Edition. David established imaginACTION in 1988 as a company dedicated to taking imaginative ideas and converting them into reality.
