George Anderson, The Road Taken

George Anderson,  The  Road Taken

Two roads diverged in an oil rich country, And sorry I could not nuke both And be a credible world leader, long I stood And stoked up allegations as best as I could To where the smoking gun bent in the undergrowth;

Then launched cruise missiles, as just as fair, And having irrefutably the better claim Because Saddam was deceitful and linked to al Qaeda; Though as for the killings there of civilians Dow Jones rose sharply just the same,

And human shields that morning equally lay In missile holes of trodden black.
Oh, I kept thousands of warheads for another day!
Yet knowing how war leads on to war,
I doubted if I should ever hold back.

I shall be telling this with a sneer
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in an oil rich country, and I- I bombed Iraq unilaterally, And that has made all the difference.
