    Crossing XXXVIII

    Dolphin sets up the game.

    Rat is fascinated with adolescence.

    Weasel tells you my dream.

Pelican adjourns for homemade ice cream.

    Zebra resonates strongly with bewilderment.

Stone crab removes tintypes as her portion.

My grip is compassionate, caring; not uptight or bossy.

Elephant scatters memories to four winds forever.

Chipmunk is concerned for your reputation.

    Bumblebee continues coaxing and heckling.

Giraffe helps me understand your baffling actions.

    Flamingo preys upon my defenses.

    Toady simultaneously wounds friendships

    hundreds of miles apart.

You weave combustible seminars of straw and milkweed.

    Crossing XXXVIX

Thwarting a bleak kiss, we hadn’t

recognized our native doorsill opens out

    across established, self-activating hardpan.

    At sunset I envision you

moments before tomatoes and green peppers

have knotted you to the garden.

"You know how one sometimes feels an immense

gratitude for such gestures?" But I still notice

two coffee mugs in your sink when I stop by

in the morning. Lasagna, you say? Layer by layer

    amass flexible, centered, self-secure

gourmet home cooking where the sun don’t shine.

These days you confuse me for a bandstand.

You have the nerve to tell me: Don’t be disturbed?
