The Attic

By Eva Sundholmi

I remember falling from that ladder the smudge
of pink on the ribbon of a Degas ballerina and my
grandmother’s bone china on the hutch her pattern
green bamboo with gold tipping the ladder a trendy
substitute for stairs to a loft and an attic door and as
I moved backward through space and I often wish
time I see the Queen Anne chair with cream brocade
and the dim halo of a lamp heavily shaded and on
the bookshelf as it whizzes past me I read John-Paul
Sartre Being and Nothingness just before I hit the
ledge and hear the snap of cracking ribs.
