Susan Hawthorne has two collections of poetry Bird (1999) and The Butterfly Effect (2005). Her work also appeared in a Penguin four-poet collection, Four New Poets (1993). Her poetry has been published in literary journals in Australia (e.g. Meanjin, HEAT, Hecate among others), USA (e.g. Sinister Wisdom), Canada (Tessera), NZ, Germany and the UK (Slow Dancer). A poem from The Butterfly Effect appeared in Best Australian Poems 2006 anthology edited by Dorothy Porter (Black Inc).
Susan is also a performer, combining aerials and poetic text. She has performed at the Melbourne Poetry Festival (2001), Byron Bay Writers Festival (2002), Story Passions, Melbourne (2006) as well as at conferences in New Zealand (2003) and India (2005). These are solo performances incorporating aerials gear such as trapeze or tissu that have developed out her involvement as scriptwriter and performer with several community circuses (1997-2003).
She is the publisher at Spinifex Press, where she is currently involved in developing eBooks. In the last twenty years she has organised numerous writers' festivals, readings, and conferences. A Research Associate at Victoria University, she supervises PhD students in writing (poetry, fiction, publishing). She is also a novelist and anthologist. She has a PhD in Political Science from the University of Melbourne and contributes political commentary to publications such as Arena Magazine and OnLine Opinion.
