Desert Veils, poem by Laurel Lamperd

      Great aunt loved Valentino
      The Sheik.
      She wanted to die
      when he died
      wept for days
      with her scrapbook of memorabilia
      cradled in her arms
and swore to be true forever.

      She married two years later.
Lived the rest of her life
      in shacks
      in mining towns
      and raised eight children.

      She went for long walks
      across the red dunes
      like Valentino did
      on his white steed
      seeking escape.
