P H O T O G R A P H S:

Arabesques publishes at least one set of photographs per issue, in addition to the single pictures that run opposite the pages of most pieces.

Photographic stories do not have a statutory page allocation in the magazine. As a rough guide, however, thirty-plus pages would be considered a long section for a single story and we sometimes break up that allocation to allow us to publish two or even three shorter sets of pictures in one issue.

There are no rules about what kind of photographs we publish. We traditionally run photojournalism that tells a story—about current events, social issues, political conflict and history. We also—in keeping with the writing in the magazine—publish photographic memoirs, diaries, and more personal sets of pictures. In general we prefer there to be a narrative element to the pictures and although often we run sets of pictures which later appear in a book of their own, we do not run photographs that have been published elsewhere in the English-speaking world. If possible, we always prefer unpublished material.

An accompanying text is not necessary for new submissions, though a short paragraph usually helps. If a photographer has an existing text, or a preferred writer, then this should be included with the proposal. Arabesques does commission writers to provide texts for photographs, depending on what we feel is required.

How to submit photographs and photographic ideas:

Ideally we like to see submissions on CD-ROM (though we would always want to see a set of prints before making a final decision to publish). Before sending in your photographs, it is advisable to write in with your idea, and with a brief explanation of what visual form your idea takes.

You can email any of the magazine staff with a story idea, and make an appointment to show your work. Please do not send picture stories by email.

We cannot take any responsibility for the loss of unsolicited prints, transparencies or CD-ROMs sent to us, though of course we make absolutely every effort to look after material we receive and will, eventually, return it, provided an adequate self-addressed envelope or Jiffy bag is enclosed.

As with written submissions, there may be a long delay in being given a final decision on your work, so please be patient, and don't send us your only existing set of photographs.
