White Space & Heart Sleeve, two poems by Kevin McLellan

White Space

In one direction:

this week another
kidnapee: these anti-
baptisms viewed
by tens of thousands
on the net: I saw Nick
Berg's

beheading & my mind
couldn't grasp head-from-
body separation; on the subway
this morning I notice
all the hands
only hands grasping
the over-the-head railing

one after the other.

      Heart on Sleeve

Haydar had been taken away by the

others with other beliefs. They did
          away with Haydar. His blood

brother Jamil's blue jeans and white

          shirt stained by life.

The hospital's sidewalk, Jamil's back is

          against the wall. Jamal's face

      hidden between clothed bicep and

          forearm. Elbow on knee.
